HOW IT WORKS
HOW DO LESSONS 'WORK'?
I usually recommend that we have an initial session to discuss your specific tutoring needs, make an assessment (if you are not new to the subject) and come up with a plan of action.
Free 30 minute taster sessions are also available.
All lessons can be provided online. Lessons can be in person if preferred and if you are based in or around Godalming/Guildford, UK. Usually students travel to my home for lessons.
I recommend two 30 minute online sessions per week for independent Latin and Greek tutees if at all possible. You may require more if you are studying A-Level independently.
Length and frequency of Classical Civilisation lessons depend on the needs of the particular student.
I use Zoom for online lessons. The 'share screen' facility, iPen and iPad allow me to recreate the classroom whiteboard live. Lessons are recorded for sharing afterwards with students via GoogleClassroom.
I set and mark 'homework' in between lessons via GoogleClassroom. This is included in the lesson price.
I provide access to my own resources, including online resources such as Quizlet, tailored to each learner.
I provide regular reports to parents on progress and attainment where appropriate.
WHICH SUBJECTS ARE TAUGHT?
GCSE and A-Level Latin and Greek: both language and literature papers are taught to the OCR specification.
I can advise on any of the literature texts selected. I can also teach WJEC/Eduqas specification for GCSE Latin if preferred.
GCSE Classical Civilisation: I can assist with the full range of topics available from OCR. I specialise in Roman City Life and Women in the Ancient World.
A-Level Classical Civilisation: I specialise in the World of the Hero paper and Imperial Image, Politics of the Late Republic and Greek Tragedy. I can teach and offer help with essay writing and exam technique in any of the paper options.
I offer tutoring as part of preparation for application to Oxbridge.
I have assisted students who are studying Latin or Greek as part of their degree course.
I am open to assisting pupils wishing to sit Common Entrance.
WHAT TECHNOLOGY DO I NEED?
- Computer with Internet Access, camera and microphone.
- Download zoom.us to your computer (free) for online meetings.
- The Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Powerpoint).
- Mobile phone or camera to upload pictures of your work.
- Access to GoogleClassroom (free) once invited by the tutor.
- Occasional use of a printer to print out certain resources if preferred or required.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER COSTS?
- Text books (as required) should be provided by the student.
- Travel costs to your destination (if you require a lesson in person). Pricing to be agreed separately.
